ByteDance signs Hollywood's first AI copyright framework

Sovereignty angle
Hollywood just taught ByteDance to ask permission. The MPA's framework doesn't stop AI video—it licenses it. ByteDance keeps the models, the MPA keeps veto power, and creators get a deal where they rent their own faces back at terms they didn't negotiate.

ByteDance reached a deal with the Motion Picture Association to implement copyright guardrails in its Seedance and Seedream models, months after a viral Tom Cruise-Brad Pitt clip triggered cease-and-desist letters.

The Motion Picture Association and ByteDance signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday that establishes copyright protections across Seedance, Seedream, TikTok, CapCut, and Dreamina. The framework marks the MPA's first formal agreement with a major AI company and closes a dispute that erupted in February when AI-generated clips of Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt went viral.

The MPA sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter on February 20, accusing the company of systemic infringement. Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros., Netflix, and Sony all followed with their own legal threats. SAG-AFTRA called Seedance's outputs blatant infringement of members' voices and likenesses. ByteDance delayed its global Seedance 2.0 rollout and added watermarking, face-blocking, and C2PA credentials to subsequent releases.

What the deal actually covers

The MOU applies to every ByteDance app running Seedance or Seedream, including TikTok's U.S. spinoff. Neither side published technical protocols or enforcement thresholds. ByteDance says newer model versions already carry stronger IP safeguards; the MPA says the deal fortifies guardrails as the technology evolves. Translation: this is a framework for ongoing negotiation, not a solved problem.

ByteDance is one domino. Chinese labs like Kling, Alibaba's Wan models, and others have released video generators with similar capabilities. OpenAI killed Sora earlier this year after facing comparable legal heat. ByteDance, by contrast, is continuing to invest in Seedance and positioning itself as a responsible innovator willing to work within Hollywood's rules—on Hollywood's terms.
